Global optimisation of modular systems

Abstract

In this talk, the original NK-model by Kauffman and the generalised NK-model by Altenberg are discussed. It is argued that the latter is better suited to represent modular systems, where modules are connected through interfaces. A representation of hierarchical modular systems (systems with modules that are part of modules) is also provided. From this, the optimal size of modules for systems with a given size, where optimality is defined as the minimum amount of time required for global optimisation is derived.
