The main focus of this book is on the emergence of collective phenomena from individual or microscopic interactions. We present a wide ranging overview from fundamental aspects of the evolution of complexity, to applications in biology, ecology, sociology, economics and urban structure formation. Part I begins with a short introduction to the topic. The first two sections deal with basic problems of Evolution of Complexity and Evolutionary Optimization, including molecular self-assembly and selection, multi-agent systems, thermodynamic and biological ensemble search strategies. Part II deals with recent trends in applications of self-organization theory of self-organization to fields such as; Biological and Ecological Dynamics, including co-evolution, emergence of functionality and collective phenomena in biological systems; Dynamics of Socio-Economic Processes, covering interacting spatial economies, and innovation processes, Urban Structure Formation and Transportation Dynamics, including settlement formation, traffic flow models and transportation networks.
